In 1928, a chance event—a petri dish left exposed to mold spores—led Fleming to a groundbreaking observation: the mold, later identified as Penicillium, killed surrounding bacteria by preventing them from forming new cell walls. This accidental discovery initiated the antibiotic era and established Fleming’s enduring influence on modern medicine.

Fleming’s innovation and keen observation were hallmarks of his career, which included significant contributions to bacteriology and infection control. In 1944, he was knighted, and in 1945 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine alongside Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, who further refined penicillin for widespread medical use.
