Alexander Fleming Limited Edition Collection

The Alexander Fleming Collection celebrates the legacy of Sir Alexander Fleming (1881–1955), the pioneering Scottish bacteriologist whose discovery of penicillin revolutionized medicine. In 1928, a chance event—a petri dish left exposed to mold spores—led Fleming to a groundbreaking observation: the mold, later identified as Penicillium, killed surrounding bacteria by preventing them from forming new cell walls. This accidental discovery initiated the antibiotic era and established Fleming’s enduring influence on modern medicine.

Fleming’s innovation and keen observation were hallmarks of his career, which included significant contributions to bacteriology and infection control. In 1944, he was knighted, and in 1945 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine alongside Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, who further refined penicillin for widespread medical use. His discovery became essential in WWII, saving countless lives in US and British military hospitals.

The Alexander Fleming Limited Edition Collection pays tribute to his medical contributions with a design rich in symbolic detail. Fleming's signature is engraved in high relief around the pen barrel, honoring the countless prescriptions written worldwide since his discovery. The cap features a replica of his original petri dish, where he observed the bacteria-killing properties of Penicillium. The pen’s background is adorned with vertical engravings resembling delicate spores, stems, and branches as seen under a microscope. The clip emulates an inoculating loop, a crucial tool in bacteriology, while the gripping section is engraved with the chemical formula for penicillin.

Crafted with Guilloché engraving and Hard Enamel artistry, the Alexander Fleming Collection is the twenty-third in the David Oscarson™ series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Available in three primary color variations, this collection is limited to just 73 pieces per color in both fountain pen and rollerball styles.
